Kokyo Gaien area is a large lawn square with Kuromatsu pine trees and has a majestic atmosphere with historic buildings such as castle gates and moats. It has been Japan's leading tourist attractions. The Kitanomaru area is connected to the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace and Kokyo Gaien area where are open to the public and popular spot for walking and nature observation.

About the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace

The East Gardens of the Imperial Palace is a 21-hectare garden located on the east side of the Imperial Palace. During the Edo period, there were the central parts of the Edo Shogunate, including the Honmaru, Ninomaru, and Sannomaru. It has been open to the public since October 1968. Many of the historical heritages are preserved and you can enjoy harmony of old buildings and the new garden.
Closed days are Mondays and Fridays. Please note that closed days and opening times are subject to change depending on the situation.

Kokyo Gaien shows various scenes of the beauty of nature in each season. In spring, you can enjoy cherry blossoms at Chidorigafuchi, one of the best cherry blossom spots in Tokyo, and views of the trees with red leaves in autumn is spectacular.

HISTORICAL SITES

Kokyo Gaien welcomes visitors from all over the world throughout the year as a gateway to sightseeing in Tokyo, and has many remains as a special historic site of Edo Castle Ruins. The historical ruins of the Edo Castle and the various structures built after Meiji period makes a great combination and unique scenery.

EAT & SHOP

Under the theme of " Traditional Japanese Cuisine" , Nanko Resthouse offers set menus of one soup and 3 dishes, " Edo Eco Lunch Box Series" ( reservation required), and more made with carefully selected local ingredients. The shop has a variety of Imperial Palace original items. Please stop by when you visit to the Imperial Palace.
